Lord Jesus,
You created us with an undeniable thirst for joy, which can be quenched only by You.
We confess and repent that we have “forsaken You, the spring of living water, and dug cisterns for ourselves” (Jeremiah 2:13, paraphrased). These cisterns seemed noble at first. Cisterns with names like home, family, finances, church and careers.
When our self-made wells disappointed us, we dug harder. When they became contaminated or cracked and dried, we became bitter, disillusioned and resentful. We sought other cisterns to dig.
Today, we lay down our shovels. We’ve decided to quit depending upon ourselves and start depending on You to satisfy our thirst for joy. We pray our adult children, and our grandchildren will do likewise.
In Your Name, we pray.
Amen.
